Some of the buyers who came from neighbouring Delta State to buy goods, expressed frustration over the development.
It was gathered that the fairly used clothes sellers embarked on the strike action over alleged imposition of ₦100 daily levy for the feeding of the market leader and another ₦100 daily levy each for waste and tax.
They contended that paying the levies would accumulate to ₦9,000 per month, which, they said would take a toll on their businesses.
One of the traders at the market who identified herself as Mrs. Blessing Adagbo, disclosed that the only money they used to pay was ₦50 daily for tax.
“All of a sudden, one woman who is claiming to be the market leader has introduced ₦100, for her feeding money, ₦100 for environmental and she also increased our tax from ₦50 to ₦100 daily,” she said.
Also speaking, another trader who identified himself as Jude Okoye, called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to rein-in on the said market leader.
He said: “Our major market days are Tuesday and Friday. So, why would they imposed ₦300 daily levy on us under this harsh economy.
“Some of us spend as much as ₦1,500 to and fro everyday for our transport.”
Okoye insisted that the traders would continue to be on strike until the issues are addressed.
When contacted, the Chairman, Traders Welfare Union in Edo State, Comrade Lucky Orukpex denounced the levy imposed on the traders.
Orukpe added that the said market leader would be resisted.
Efforts to reach the said market leader was unsuccessful at the time of filing this report on Wednesday.
