EFCC Operatives Arrest 25 Suspected Internet Fraudsters At ‘Yahoo Academy’ in Edo

The Benin Zonal Directorates of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have arrested no fewer than 25 suspected internet fraudsters in Benin City, Edo State.

The suspects were arrested during the raid of a “Yahoo Academy” (cybercrime training centre), in the state capital on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

The raid was conducted  following a tip-off that the apartment was being used as a “Yahoo Academy”, where individuals were trained in internet fraud and other illicit activities.

A statement on Friday by the spokesman of EFCC, Dele Oyewale, said operatives of the anti-graft agency acted on intelligence, moved swiftly and apprehend the suspects at the hideout.

During the operation, the team confiscated six exotic cars, several laptops, and mobile phones, all suspected to be tools used for cybercrime.

“We will ensure thorough investigations and bring the suspects to court as soon as possible,” Oyewale said, adding that investigations were ongoing to unravel the extent of the suspects’ criminal network.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to eradicating cybercrime in Nigeria, calling on the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information to aid their operations.

This latest crackdown is part of the EFCC’s broader strategy to dismantle criminal syndicates and restore public confidence in the fight against financial crimes.

The discovery of such an organised training school highlights the growing sophistication of internet fraud in the region.
