The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has charged all graduating Recruit Constables of Batch 2022, to utilize their newly-acquired authority to protect Nigerian citizens, enforce laws, and apprehend criminals.
He gave the charge on Thursday, January 23, 2025, in his message to the passing-out parade ceremony of the 10,000 Police Constables held in Police Colleges and Schools across the country.
The IGP was represented by the AIG in charge of Zone 5, Benin, Arungwa Nwazue, at the passing-out of 493 (313 males and 180 females), Recruit Constables held at the Police Training School (PTS), Ogida, Benin City, Edo State.
He noted that the responsibility of policing requires the highest level of professionalism and integrity and strict adherence to the rule of law and established procedures.
“Your role demands empathy and compassion towards the civilian population, particularly the vulnerable, while maintaining firmness and fairness in all interactions.
“Strive to be perceived as a friend and partner to the public, inspiring hope and confidence in the security apparatus. Remember that the uniform you wear and the office you hold, are symbols of trust and responsibility, never to be exploited for intimidation, harassment, or perversion of justice. Abhor all forms of lawlessness, human rights abuse, and unprofessional conduct,” he said.
Egbetokun further charged the new Recruits to demonstrate boldness, responsibility, discipline, and loyalty to the Force, while remaining calm and composed in the face of adversity.
“As you progress, uphold the values of patriotism and dedication to service,” he admonished.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), promised that the Commission, as employers of the Police, will continue to support the new Recruit Constables.
Argungu who was represented by Barr Babatunde Dada, said the Commission will ensure that the new Recruit’s career progression will be predictable and within the requirements of established rules and regulations.
He, however, disclosed that the Commission will henceforth closely monitor their activities and will not hesitate to sanction anyone who deviates from the time-tested established Police rules of engagement.
“I am aware of the quality of training that you have been exposed to in the training colleges and wish to charge you to go out and make our nation proud.
“We will also commend and recognise gallantry and commitment to duty,” Argungu assured.
In his goodwill message, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to shun corruption, UT use the knowledge they acquired at the training school to build trust and protect communities.
He reminded them that the essence of their training is to protect communities and build relationships while serving with honour and integrity.
“Today is a proud day for Edo State as these constables are through with their training and ready to serve, and their hard work and dedication have brought them here.
“You are from Edo and Delta States. You know our land, people, and culture. Use this knowledge to protect our communities.
“Policing is about doing the right thing. Be honest, be professional in the discharge of your duties as a police man and be kind. Say no to corruption, work with the communities to prevent crimes, and build trust and relationships as these will make Nigeria safe.
“Edo State Government will support you and give you the tools needed to succeed. As you begin this noble journey, your purpose is to protect lives and properties as Edo State and Nigeria depend on you. Serve with honour and duty, and together, we will make our State great,” the Governor said.
The ceremony ended with words of advice and encouragement from the State Commissioner of Police, Umoru Peter Ozigi.
Highlights of the occasion was the match past by the 2022 intakes and the presentation of awards to awarded deserving graduands in various categories.
